Spearmint is a minty, slightly fruity aroma that is less bright than peppermint.
Like peppermint, spearmint belongs to the genus Mentha, and its use also dates back to the time of Egypt, Mesopotamia, and India 5000 years ago.
Mints have been grown and used since ancient times. The name "mint" is a product of Greek mythology. According to myth, Hades, the god of the Underworld, angered his wife Persephone by having an affair with a nymph named Minthe. Persephone was so enraged that she transformed Minthe into a sweet herb. Thus, mint leaves were placed around the bodies of the Greek dead at burial not only to cover up the smell, but also to serve as a reminder to Hades.
